Finding the Right Neighborhood

When you think about your dream home, are you seeing the house, or the neighborhood it’s in?

It’s easy to get caught up in bedroom and bathroom counts when you’re shopping for a new home, but the biggest choice you’re going to make in the process is of course the ‘where’ question. So how do you find the home that’s going to be the perfect fit for your whole lifestyle?

Here are three of my favorite tips to see if an area or a particular area is right for you:

  • Check out the basic stats.
What is the median sale price of homes in a given neighborhood? How do the local and nearby schools perform? What amenities are nearby? How popular is the neighborhood in today’s market?
  • See what the neighbors are doing.
Get a sense of local activities, and see if it looks like a place with frequent block-parties or if people may keep more to themselves.
  • Learn the traffic patterns.
Knowing that you’re close to the highway or a public transportation center is one thing. You should find out if there are frequent jams at key commuting times, or if a nearby farmers’ market limits road access during weekends. You may also want to consider how much parking is available, both for yourself and for when you want to entertain.

Give me a call anytime you’d like to discuss which neighborhoods you’re considering. I love to talk about local real estate issues and market conditions you should consider as you’re building your home buying plan.

Situated in the foothills of the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains just seventy miles west of Nation’s Capitol Of Washington D.C.  the historic Scaleby Manor Home captures the true atmosphere and elegance of the region  dating back to the early 1900s. The manor home is a 23,600 Sq.Ft. 4-story, nine bay, brick and marble dwelling in the Colonial Revival style.

Scaleby was constructed by the Gilpin family over a period of two years from 1909 to 1911. The main house was designed by Baltimore architect Howard Sill. The house and surrounding property remained in the Gilpin family until 1986. The scale of this complex alone merits attention.

Two-story Carrera marble columns distinguish the facade of the main house and the same marble is used as window sills on four of the contributing outbuildings.

The front facade features a five bay front porch supported by colossal Ionic order  Carrera Marble columns.

Land is mostly open and suitable for a Luxe Bed & Breakfast or a Vineyard . Also on the property are the contributing Gardener’s Cottage, the Farm Manager’s House, the stable, the garage, a barn, a double-crib barn, the tenant house, a smokehouse, a water storage facility, the pump house, a two-story tower-like water catchment facility, a garden pergola, an ice-well with a gazebo, a stone terrace, and a concrete-lined pond, Tennis Court and Swimming Pool with a Club House.
An appreciation for rich detail is evident in all aspects of the complex. Scaleby is also a notable result of the industrialization of the American building trades in its manner of construction especially in such features as the reinforced concrete floors and stairs, and the steel structure of the roof. All of these elements contribute to the monumentality of the complex.

Set amid rolling hills in the heart of Virginia Hunt Country, Scaleby is surrounded by other large historic farms and estates. Located just west of Middleburg in Clark County Hunt territory, the property offers an abundance of riding trails, peaceful surroundings and dramatic views.
